The valley head in Saalbach Hinterglemm

It's not just about the action ...

It’s no secret that Saalbach Hinterglemm in winter is mainly full of action, adrenaline, beats and sports. Skiing fun and après-ski as well as freeride action and skiing courses for kids are the order of the day here. Yet the motto is also – It's not just about the action.

It takes about seven to ten minutes to get from Hinterglemm to the car park at the valley head in the district of Lengau. As soon as you get here, you will notice how quiet the surroundings are, away from all the hustle and bustle. You will suddenly hear a faint ringing that keeps getting louder until you can make out the silhouette of a horse-drawn carriage. This is the only mode of transport that runs here in the the valley head in winter. The journey continues with two PS through a truly winter wonderland.

Adventure for young and old

The horse-drawn carriage ride lasts about 20 minutes. But not even the smallest passengers will feel the cold when they are nestled in warm covers. This trip is perfect for families. The landscape at the valley head breathtaking, but there is so much more to discover here. After you arrive at the destination in the carriage, you will immediately notice the so-called Golden Gate Bridge of the Alps. You will hear a faint “Ah” and “Oh” from young and old alike when they see this structure for the first time. The kids can hardly wait to dash over the suspension bridge. You shouldn’t be too scared of heights as it does wobble a little.

What’s the pointed cap all about?

After you have crossed the Golden Gate Bridge, you will be right at the start of the treetop path. Some people would ask why they can see so many people walking around with funny hats. This exciting thematic hiking trail comes with a very important and popular accessory – a green pointed cap, which every visitor gets at the entrance of the treetop path. The pointed cap is a great keepsake. And a great accessory for lots of funny souvenir photos. Speaking or souvenir photos – the best place to take photos is right in the middle of the Golden Gate Bridge. You’ll have a great view.

Save the best for last

After the roughly 45-minute hike through the treetop path, you’ll notice the cold weather creeping under your skin a little because of the wintry temperatures. Enjoy the stopover at Lindlingalm where everyone can warm up again, the kids with hot cocoa and the adults with a traditional “Jagatee” (tea with rum). Of your stomach starts to growl, then treat yourself to their local dishes such as cheese noodles or ribs. You can also feel the peace and tranquillity of the valley head in the cosy huts. Before you return on a toboggan or a horse-drawn sleigh, simply absorb the peace and silence of the environment and breathe in the cold as well as refreshing air.
