Late summer: The best time of the year for long-distance hikers and nature lovers

5 tips for September

In September, autumn arrives in Saalbach Hinterglemm and sets the mountains aglow. Bright colours adorn the surrounding Pinzgau Grass Mountains, and the crystal-clear air makes a hike over the surrounding peaks a real treat. With these 5 tips we tell you how you can best enjoy late summer:

1. For casual hikers and those who like a picnic

All 6 lifts will be operating until 4th October. Perfect to comfortably explore the mountains of Saalbach Hinterglemm in late summer. Enjoy the ascent to the most beautiful mountain peaks and panoramic trails.

Our tip: After the ascent with the Reiterkogel gondola, it is only around a 20-minute walk to the Reiteralm. There you can pre-order a picnic basket, find a cosy spot in the surrounding meadows and enjoy some culinary delights. The picnic basket is generously packed: bread, sausage, cheese and various types of spreads, antipasti, and various other delicacies. All sustainably packed in preserving jars.

2. For early birds and long-distance hikers
If you want to start your day in the glorious morning sunshine, from Monday to Friday, between 07:30 and 07:40, you can travel up the mountain in the Schattberg X-press. At an altitude of over 2,000 metres above sea level, you can especially enjoy the morning peace and quiet. For long-distance hikers – the Seven Summits Tour starting point is at the top of the Schattberg. This demanding tour is 24 km long and leads you over the seven highest peaks of the Glemmtal.  With Alpine character and a difference of 1,450 metres in altitude, this tour is only suitable for fit and sure-footed hikers.

3. For lovers of breakfast and brunch up on the mountain
What could be better than breakfast on up on the mountain? In Saalbach Hinterglemm, there are numerous huts where you will be spoilt with culinary delights. At the Sonnalm, on the Reitergkogel, you will not believe your eyes when you see the feast laid out on the table. With an advanced reservation, Manuela and Christoph will conjure up a breakfast of regional and home-made products. If you have already completed the popular sunrise tour to the Tristkogel early in the  morning, you can rest your legs with a stopover at the Ossmannalm, charge you batteries with a hearty breakfast, lean back and relax. The Montana Royal Alpin Club offers breakfast without having to walk too far. The restaurant is situated directly next to the top station of the Kohlmais lift. Breakfast is served until 11:30, and you can enjoy a traditional Weißwurst (white sausage), or classic breakfast at an altitude of almost 1,800 metres above sea level.

Are you not such an early bird? The 40 huts in and around Saalbach Hinterglemm will make sure you are spoilt for choice, even if you do not want to venture up the mountains until the afternoon.

Amid a thousand spruce trees of the 200-year-old forest, you will find the forest is a spa of a special kind, although not decorated with elaborate buildings or artificially created baths, but a place that is in harmony with nature. Forest wellness -pure relaxation at 1,700 metres above sea level. Yoga exercises on the wooden platforms under the treetops, surrounding by relaxing bird song is just so relaxing. A small library in the forest invites you to lay back and relax in the hammocks. Those who wish to approach the art of mindfulness will find the necessary tips in this natural wellness environment.

5. For E-Bikers and touring cyclists
The late summer is the best time of year for lengthy bike tours. Suppose you prefer to end your tour with a trail descent. In that case, we recommend, for example, the loop from Hinterglemm, via Marten and the Rosswaldhütte up to just under the Reichkendlkopf. From here you don’t have to continue along the gravel road back down to the valley but can let off steam on the Hochalm trail.
